Suggest Treatment For High Fever And Vomiting In A Child

Posted on Mon, 20 Feb 2017
Question: Hi,
My daughter (3 years 7 months, weight 14.3 kg) has been suffering from fever and vomiting.

- On 25 XXXXXXX (2017) evening, she complained of stomach pain and after some time she vomited. We gave her Junior Lanzol 1 tab in 1/4 water.
- By the night, she had fever (around 100), and we gave her Crocin DS 3.5 ml.
- She again vomited at night (2 AM). We then gave her Ondem 5ml.
- She was alright the next day 26 XXXXXXX (2017).

To be on the safe side, we took her to the doctor on 26 XXXXXXX and the doctor prescribed Ondem for vomiting, Crocin DS or Meftal P for fever, enterogermina 1 bottle if loose motions, 1 tab Junior Lanzol in 1/4 water twice a day.

She was fine on 27 January with no fever, vomiting, and no stomach pain. We did not give any medicine on 27 XXXXXXX as she was alright. However, on 28th evening, she again developed fever and then at night she vomited at around 5 AM.

We again started giving her the prescribed medicines:
- Ondem 5ml 15 minutes before food (interval between two doese should be 6 hours)
- Junior Lanzol 15 mg (1 tablet in 1/4 glass of water twice a day before food)
- Crocin DS 4 ml (<100) or Meftal P 5 ml (>100)
- Enterogermina 1 repsule two times a day (stool is thin not her usual motion)

Can you please advise?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Give meds as prescribed;if no improvement, appendicitis to rule out...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone through the medical history of your daughter and am sorry for the situation she is going through.

First of all, I would like to emphasize that is very important to know how active the child is when she has no symptoms. If she plays and behaves normally during two episodes of fever and vomiting there is nothing to worry about. This means that the infection is viral and it usually goes away within 4-7 days. Probably it is a viral gastroenteritis.

Antibiotics are not necessary since it is a viral infection. Just keep using the medications the doctor gave you. Make sure that your daughter has eaten properly and is well hydrated. Orange juice rich in vitamin C will help her get over the symptoms faster.

My advice is that you must give her the medication regularly as prescribed by the doctor. Crocin is usually recommended to be given only when the body temperature is over 100. Enterogermina, Ondem, and junior Lanzol are good to be given regularly for 3 days as they can help in preventing further episodes of vomiting and diarrhea.

Do not force her to eat. Give light meals: toast, yogurt, banana or soup.

If the fever will continue with vomiting, then, should get back and checked by pediatrician to rule out appendicitis.

I hope this was helpful for you.
Wish fast recovery.

Yes, she is her normal self when there is no fever.

She has lost her appetite. We are trying our best to prompt her to eat and drink ORS water, but it is very difficult.

I forgot to mention how much temperature she had. She had temperature in the range of 100.1 and 100.4 in the two days (28 and 29 Jan).

Regarding Junior lanzol, can we mix it with apple juice, orange juice, or glucon D?
She is refusing to take it with plain water.

Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing the additional information regarding your daughter's health.

If she behaves normally during the fever episodes, then, what she is experiencing is due to an acute viral gastroenteritis.

I understand she has no appetite; that's why I advised not to force her to eat. At least, keep her giving plain water or juice. You can mix juice with ORS and Junior Lanzol, there is no problem with that.

Hope this answered your queries.
