Brief Answer:
More details required

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthCareMagic. I have gone through the details provided and need to ask a few more things. I have seen the uploaded discharge summary.
1. Was the child born preterm? If so, how much?
2. What was the birth weight of the child? Did the child cry at birth?
3. Did the child require intensive care soon after birth?
4. Was vision or hearing screening of the child done? When did you realise that the child is unable to see?
5. Please give the full form of VER.
6. Could you please upload a separate scanned copy of the MRI report?

Let me mention that febrile seizures are often seen in children. Diffuse cerebral atrophy may or may not be a cause of concern. Please revert back with the details sought, and I will try to help you.

Brief Answer:
Cortical blindness wth developmental delay in LBW

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I have gone through the medical documents in detail. It seems that your child was born preterm with a birth weight of 2.5 kg which is considered low birth weight. At that point of time, the development was still ongoing and some of it was probably halted midway. On top of that, the child suffered from an episode of encephalitis which complicated the matters even further. The images that get captured by the eyes get interpreted by the back portion of the brain which has been affected thus leading to cortical blindness i.e. the brain can no longer interpret the images that the eyes are capturing. As the doctors at XXXXXXX have already explained to you, there is very less likelihood that the vision would return and there is not much to be done either.

There is another part that you need to understand. Under normal scenario, with advancement of age, the child is able to do certain things one after the other. These are called developmental milestones and not being able to reach them in proper time is known as developmental delay. Children born preterm have more likelihood of developmental delays. I am sorry to say that your child has developmental delays as well. You have gone to so many doctors seeking help. But as advised, you need to take the child to the neurodevelopmental follow up clinic of PGI XXXXXXX or XXXXXXX or some other hospital. I would strongly insist that you go only to these select places only as there is more likelihood of your getting misguided. There, they would be able to assess the child periodically and administer certain therapies and exercises that will help the child to catch up.

I understand that you are in a tough situation that is bound to make any parents despair. But you will have to accept it as it is and deal it in light of the present situation. I hope you understand.

Brief Answer:
Vision centre damage

Detailed Answer:
Glad that you found the answer. The infection, be it meningitis or encephalitis, has damaged portions of the brain including that of the vision and there is not much that can be done. Once again sorry for the dismal situation. If you found the answer helpful, please leave a positive rating and review on the answer.
