Suggest Treatment For High Fever

Posted on Thu, 7 Sep 2017
Question: I recently went to a hospital with pain and high fever. I was diagnosed with an infection and they pumped me with antibiotics. A few days later after leaving the hospital I was still no better, then I passed a large stone in my urine. I felt great until I had dinner. It is now a day later and I feel blocked up. Can you recommend anything?

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

By "blocked up" I take it you mean constipated (not that you can't urinate). Since you did receive antibiotics, and probably a high dose of them, your gut flora is likely altered, which can cause digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, etc.

If you have been constipated for just a few days, you can take a bowel stimulant laxative (if you aren't feeling the urge to go). An example is Ex-lax. If you feel the urge to have a BM but are having a hard time passing stool, you can consider a stool softener such as Docussate or Colace. Milk of Magnesia can help in both ways, but drink a lot of water with it. If you have been constipated for more than a few days, then consider an enema or going in to an urgent care clinic for digital disimpaction. If the problem is not constipation but rather that you feel bloated, consider taking a product with simethicone which breaks up gas. An example of this is Gas X.

Once you do move your bowels, then consider having a small glass of prune juice nightly until your bowels are back to normal. I would say to try this now, but if you are feeling bloated at all, having fruit or fruit juices right now can add to that.

I would also recommend a probiotic although the research on probiotic indicates that they are more effective at preventing the problem by taking them during the time you are taking antibiotics rather than after the fact.

I'm glad you passed the stone, but the after math of treatment sounds difficult. Hope you are feeling better soon. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
