Suggest Treatment For Pain In Shoulder And Arm

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I am having problems with my shoulder and neck for a while now. It is to the point that I am unable to exercise with my arms and with daily functions. I was told that some part of the spine disc is pushing on my nerve causing me pain in my left back shoulder to neck region. It was suggested that my high blood pressure medication might be causing problems with my disc causing nerve pinching (due to the salt change possibly?). My medication was changed however the problem still exists. Could you give me some suggestions on what to do next to treat the problem or what high blood pressure medication to discuss with my doctor?

Brief Answer:
First, diagnosis should be achieved.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

It is true that your neck, shoulder and arm symptoms are most probably caused by spinal column disease and herniated disc disease is one of the most probable conditions.

Changes in the blood microelements such salt, calcium, potassium etc. related to blood pressure drugs use can predispose to degenative ( desicated ) discs disease and spinal spondylosis.

If there is evidence that degenative changes of the column have occurred already, there is little to do to revert those changes back.

First there is need for a correct diagnosis of your condition and for this purpose neurologic examination and imaging studies ( plain radiographs and MRI of your cervical spine ) of your column are needed.

Possible diagnoses include cervical spine herniated disc disease, arthritis, degenative discs disease.

After the diagnosis treatment possibilities should be clear and first consist on conservative treatment with NSAID or painkillers, physical therapy with the aim of strengthening neck muscles and reducing vertebral joints loading ( stretching exercises ).

Other possible treatment ways include spinal nerves and epidural injections.

Lisinopril should not affect spinal condition, so is an appropriate treatment.

Hydrochlortiazide affects the body salt levels so an equilibrated diet and fluid intake should be instituted.

These issues should be all discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Take care.
