Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip, Left Ear Partial Deafness And Gastritis

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: Have long problem with post nasal drip. Now on steroid spray for nose, plus one a day antihistamine. Since yesterday, left ear partially deaf, assume by catarrh in it. Not painful but my hearing now very odd! Would Sudafed help, or is it contra indicated as I am on Atenolol (beta blocker) once a day, for hypertension.
Don't want to bother my GP with this, as he must be sick of the sight of me with my post nasal drip etc. Spent five days in hospital recently, had every test going, and am fine, apart from the drip, and mild gastritis. Any ideas to clear my wretched ear? Would a nasal decongestant spray be a good idea, bearing in mind I am also having the prescribed steroid spray, twice daily? Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
nose drops very good idea

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

On the other hand I would use decongestant nose drops / spray like otrivin (oxymetazoline). These drops will help to keep the eustachian tubes open and ventilate the ear. Instill 3 drops in each nostril 3 times daily for 5 days and folow it up with seam inhalation. These drops will help to clear your sinuses as well. It shouldn't interfere with your BP management.

Further I will suggest to see your doctor because you may need a course of antibiotics to clear your sinuses.

Remember to drink plenty of warm fluids and avoid air conditioning and cold foods.

Many thanks, Dr. Godhi. Asked my slave, sorry - darling daughter - to obtain ear drops/spray at local pharmacy. Assume this medication won't clash with the Flixonase spray - probably good idea NOT to use them too close together. While I'm at it, any hints on how to avoid post nasal drip in the future, short of living somewhere with no traffic, plants around?! It's been a really torrid three months for me, dreadful chest, coughing up stuff all the time - all due to wretched drip!Ne Never want to go through that again. By the way, I am sure there is no infection in my sinuses, ear, just a build up of stuff in the ear, while my sinuses seem clear and cough is abating (about time).

Appreciate your advice for which many thanks. An ENT expert is just about the only specialist I haven't seen, though I am referred to the Chest Clinic at University College London hospital in a month or so, to check on my progress.

Best wishes, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Nose drops will not interact with nasal spray

Detailed Answer:
Hi and sorry for the delay in response,
You can use nasal drops and spray together , no problem.

ITs a good idea to see a chest physician also since you are coughing up lots of phlegm for 3 months. There might be some disease process going on in the chest as well. Do not worry, I am sure its not something serious.

The flixonase nasal spray will definitely help you keep the post nasal drip at bay.

It is possible that you are suffering from respiratory allergy, it can explain all your chest and post nasal symptoms. Please see the chest physician to come to a definitive diagnosis.
