Question: Hi, doctore my son is 20 months old recently on 08th Nov' i got him admitted to hospital for loose motion, vomitting and fever for 4 days where my doctor had administered monotax and metrogyl through IV. He was ok and discharged on 11th Nov. But after 20 days gap again loose motion had started. On hospitalisation stool examined and there was lots of pus cells present. Tell me why the loose motion again started. Should i go for any other tests?

Brief Answer:
This seems to be viral diarrhea - Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi...No need for any further tests. In this age the kids, while playing, keep everything in the mouth and the microbes on those articles can go in and cause diarrhoea.

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.
I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - You can use cerelac...any flavour will do or any cereal based diet. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhoea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Brief Answer:
Hypocalcemic seizures have a good prognosis - dont worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi...what you are quoting is called - hypocalcaemic seizures - that is seizures occurring due to low calcium content in the blood. These have a very good prognosis and do not tend to recur once proper treatment is given. Moreover you mention that his calcium levels are normal now.

You need not continue calcium supplements but you need to continue vitamin D supplements which makes the intestines to absorb calcium well from his dietary contents. I suggest you use Vitamin D at 400IU per day. This is according to XXXXXXX Academy of Paediatrics recommendations.

He will be fine in future, don't worry.
