Suggest Treatment For Severe Bronchitis

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: Have had severe bronchitis for two months. Now I have loads of phlegm causing me to cough so hard and frequently that I have to wear diapers. Am mostly in bed. Now, twice, I was retchiing so much to cough I began to vomit sour tasting stuff. What can I do to stop the frequency and strength of retching? And esp. the vomiting? My lungs were clear so was not given any antibiotics by doctor. Also, he didn't hear any wheezing, which I have.

1. Severe seasonal allergies, and allergies to grasses, and certain trees. I've been back in this town for the first time in 40 years. When I was young, I developed severe eczema and food allergies as well. Note: the eczema has returned in full force since my return.
2. No, I don't smoke.
3. Yes, last week I visited my doctor because of my prolonged dry cough. X-rays are fine. No phlegm at that time. No fever, so she didn't prescribe antibiotics. Just cough syrup, nose spray, and humidifier.
4. Two days after my dr's visit,. All my current symptoms appeared. Yes, I have type 2 diabetes (no insulin yet) & am taking a 1/2 pill for hypertension.
5. Paxil, adderall, Crestor, fenofibrate, acyclovir, zofran (as needed), xanax, hypertension pill. Is there medication to stop constant back of throat tickling so I don't cough/vomit as much? Am exhausted from coughing Day & nite. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
My views.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Sorry for the delay.
Your history suggests that you may have Cough variant Asthma precipitated by infection. My views:
1. Sometimes, infections can prolong the illness, and will remain to bother you until they are addressed. I think you may be benefited by a broad spectrum antibiotic. you need a prescription from your doctor for that. Clear lungs and normal X Ray do not always exclude infections. Prolonged cough and sputum unresponsive to conventional treatment warrants an antibiotic.
2. For similar cases, we try a short course of steroids (Despite you being a diabetic) which gives dramatic results.(!caution with infections!)
3. Anti histaminic drugs (Loratidine or cetrizine) or Leukotriene antagonists (Monteleukast) are very good drugs that can bring down your cough.
As far as i know, 3rd category drugs are available OTC in US. You may try them till your next schedule to your doctor, who will prescribe what is best for you.
If there is anything you need to know, please post it; i will be glad to help you.
Good luck.
