default
Posted on Sat, 5 Sep 2015
Question: had a spontaneous severe eye pain over my outer eyebrow...lasted about 20 minutes, then faded. Pain was excruciating, feeling like someone was sticking a needle deed into my brow. was on an airplane getting ready to land in XXXXXXX but have never had a symptom like this is my life. I am a 77 year old fairly healthy female. Good heart condition, no high blood pressure, etc.

I read your question carefully and I am sorry about the pain you were in.

That type of pain could correspond to several possibilities. One is glaucoma, raised eye pressure, but usually there are vision issues as well and does not regress spontaneously.

Another possibility is neuralgia, pain related to the nerve responsible for sensitivity in that area, either the main nerve, trigeminal neuralgia or its distal branch, supraorbital neuralgia.

If you had eye redness, lacrimation, nasal discharge etc cluster headache may be suspected.

It is not a type of pain which would suggest a brain lesion, something like stroke or brain tumor. So for now if pain is gone and no other symptoms only observation is advised.

I remain at your disposal for further questions.

Thank you, doctor, but I had no other symptoms, i.e. no redness in eye, no eye pain, nor vision problems. The only problem was the pain above the outer part of the eyebrow. I am pretty pain tolerant, but this was sudden and excruciating..brought tears to my eyes. Happy to hear it was not neurological! Just one of those things that happen in older folks!!

Thank you for your feedback. Just one small correction, I didn't say it was not neurological, neuralgia or cluster headache which I mentioned are neurological conditions. What I meant was that it was no brain damage, no threatening issue.

I take it you have had no other symptoms which is great. It confirms it's not something to panic about, at times such episodes can remain isolated without an explanation, hopefully your case.

Wishing you good health.
