Suggest Treatment For Sharp Intense Pain In Middle Finger

Posted on Sat, 6 Dec 2014
Question: Hello sir, My right middle finger began feeling like a bee had stung it last night after I wrapped up a plant outside to protect it from the cold so I rubbed some antihistamine cream on it. I spent the night hardly able to sleep due to the sharp intence pain that finally mostly subsided by morning. The pain returned with a vengeance a few hours later prompting me to take a 500 mg acetaminophen. The pain subsided again but keeps returning in waves! I didn't feel the bee stinging me nor did my finger swell like I usually react to bee stings. I'm at a losss as to what is going on with my finger. It feels like a red hot poker is cutting into it!

Brief Answer:
Following advice on bee sting...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I am sorry for the bad experience with bee sting.

I advise to:
- watch if there is any remaining sting inside
- if not, apply cold compresses for a couple of days
- take acetaminophen when you feel the pain
- take an antihistaminic drug you find over the counter to subside sting reaction.

You will be better within a couple of days.

Wish fast recovery!

Dear Doctor, I really do not believe this finger pain is from a bee sting in 30' weather. What else could possibly do this? Sincerely, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Please provide a photograph of the finger...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Thank you for providing additional data.

Can you send a photograph of the finger?

I have gone again through your medical history and I saw that everything happened after wrapping your plant. May I know the type of plant? Most possibly, a plant prickle might be the cause.

Apart wrapping your plant, do you remember to have done other work?

Thank you!
Dr.Albana

Thank you for the follow up. The plant is a Mock Orange. Perhaps an Asp was hiding among its branches and leaves when I was tucking them under the cover and it bit me. A haven't seen any swelling or bite marks on my finger and no more major pain attacks since last one around 3p.m. which was milder and shorter in duration. Ill take another pain pill before going to bed shortly. Hopefully no more pain tonight. Good night.

Brief Answer:
Hope no more pain...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear!

If no bite marks, then, might be allergic reaction. Continue apply anti-hystamine cream, take 1 anti-hystaminic drug at bedtime and one pain killer.

Hope you won't have pain anymore and everything will be settled in a short period.

All the best!
