fluids and probiotics

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You have gastroenteritis. This is inflammation/infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

It can be caused by viral or bacterial infection.

Treatment: (1) refrain from solid food for at least 24 hours unless the symptoms should stop suddenly

When you restart eating, start with small amounts of dry foods first.

(2)use fluids to prevent dehydration. Dehydration can occur if the fluids loss from the vomiting and diarrhea are not replaced.
Using oral rehydration fluids or gatorade would be best because they would give back both the fluids and electrolytes lost

It is very important when replacing fluids in vomiting not to use a lot at one time. If a lot of fluid is taken, vomiting will occur.

You should use 1 tsp to 1 tbs every 5 to 10 minutes for the first hour, then increase the amount once you tolerate this small amount. Increase it gradually.
(3)probiotics- these have been found to shorten the course of gastroenteritis. Can be taken directly or in yogurt

(4)peptobismol may help to decrease the vomiting and diarrhea. There are also other medications that may help reduce diarrhea but you may not need those immediately. The symptoms should decrease on their own

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Would I find probiotics at any pharmacy? I am assuming a pharmacist will know what I am looking for. Thank you...it has been a miserable day...as a teacher it is hard to stay at school when you cannot figure out whether to put your buttocks or your head over the toilet when both are going at the same time! Needless to say I left after the first class.

Brief Answer:
yes should be found at your pharmacy

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes the probiotics would be available at your local pharmacy or you can use yogurt such as activa or yoplait original.

Could only imagine feeling that way while at work

Please feel free to ask anything else

One more question...how long will this last? And what should i do if it doesn't get better by that time frame? My primary care doctor decided to take a supervisory position and so I am having trouble finding a new primary care doctor. Many physicians are not taking new patients.

Brief Answer:
varies from one person to the next

Detailed Answer:
HI

It varies from one person to the next. In most adults symptoms last 2 to 5 days though it is possible for some to have symptoms up to a week.

On the other hand , some adults experience 24 hours of symptoms and then nothing else.

if any thing else is unclear, feel free to ask
