Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis. Needs Xray and staging to decide treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

You could be having Osteoarthritis of the knee where the cartilage cushion gets degenerated and the bone surfaces start to rub each other causing crepitus or cracking sound.

You need to get an Xray to confirm arthritis. If you do have arthritis, you can take pain killers, avoid squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs and kneeling. Apply hot packs to the affected regions. Do static cycling exercise and swimming to keep fit.

Do get an Xray and upload for my review. According to the severity of arthritis I can guide you to the best treatment ranging from conservative to surgical options.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Brief Answer:
Static cycling better

Detailed Answer:
Yes, You can do walking exercise but only writing comfortable limits. If the knee cracks, it is better to do static cycling on exercise bike, as this is non loading stress to the joint and will reduce the stress of degeneration.

The VA has chosen not to xray and give me a knee brace. Will the brace help? What about over the counter meds. and vitamin D?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aashish Raghu (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Knee brace is fine. Also take calcium and Vitamin D

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Knee brace can help to reduce stress in the knee by avoiding flexion movement. Also perform physiotherapy to strengthen the knee muscles. Calcium and Vitamin D will help reduce the knee degeneration indirectly so you can take them.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Yes, You can do as much as you are comfortable in the Airdyne. Avoid fatty diet, junk food. Keep well hydrated. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables.

You can use a cane to be held of the opposite side hand while walking. It should help you.

Synvisc one should help in moderate arthritis. I need to see your X-ray and examine you to be able to tell you for sure if this isn't too late to be using this injection. It depends on the available cartilage left in the knee.

You can do the leg lifts.

Vitamin D and milk are fine as of now.

Physiotherapy is a set of exercises to strengthen your muscles which get wasted in arthritis. This will be taught and monitored by a trained Physiotherapist. It may require ultrasound therapy as well which can be provided in Physiotherapy.

Seems to be better but it does crack after I do the air dyne or get up from sitting?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aashish Raghu (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Regular physiotherapy

Detailed Answer:
That can't be helped because of already degenerated cartilage. Regular physiotherapy will strengthen the muscles and reduce the chances of that happening.
