Question : My Sister's Mother-in-Law 64 years old, has been complaining of mild vaginal spottings and itching around the area. She had her menopause 10 years ago, and is healthy till date.
On consulting a family doctor, she was advised to have an US scan of pelvic done. The report is attached with this query.
Her Hysterectomy is scheduled next week. Biopsy of the faulty mass would be performed simultaneously during the procedure.

Please help us understand the findings of the attached report in detail.
We would also be thankful to have your valuable advice on the risks associated with the surgery and complications if any after the same.

Apologies for the poor quality of the attached image.

Brief Answer:
fibroid polyp.

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
This report is suggestive of myomatous polyp which means a fibroid of uterus which has an elongated peduncle.
The fluid collection around the mass is just minor serous discharge which is not able to come into vagina due to obstruction by the mass.
This is the reason of her intermenstrual bleeding and needs removal and histological assessment.
At her age as you must be knowing such bleeding episodes are taken seriously because they have high incidence of malignancy.
Risks of the surgery are per se very minimal in expert hands and thus nothing much to worry.
Minor risks include post operative urinary tract infection or retention and mild to moderate gastritis due to surgical stress.
Major and commonest problem is deep vein thrombosis (due to proliged bed rest and immobility), and thus early mobilization is always preferred.
Another major risk is intraoperative or post operative bleeding for which surgeon's expertise is a must have.
But major problems rarely occur in modern surgical practices so don't be anxious and opt for surgery at the earliest.
In case you have any questions I will be glad to answer.
Regards
Dr Manisha.
