Brief Answer:
Get done PFT ( pulmonary function test ).

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
In my opinion you should get done PFT ( pulmonary function test ) to rule out asthma and other breathing problem.
PFT is must for the diagnosis of asthma.
So get done PFT.
If PFT is normal then no need to worry much for asthma.
At your age of 51, menstrual cycle can be irregular and there are lots of hormonal changes in the body. These changes cause low estrogen level. Estrogen is cardioprotective in nature. So low estrogen in menopausal women is a risk factor for cardiac disease.
And cardiac disease can gives symptoms similar of asthma.
So get done ecg and 2d echo to rule out cardiac cause for your symptoms.
If both are normal then no need to worry for cardiac cause.
So I advice you to first rule out asthma and cardiac cause for your symptoms.
Are your menses regular or you are already in menopause?
Please reply me this so that I can guide you further about what to do before bed to prevent this episodes.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
