Question : Hi Doctor, my dad is having hypertension and was taking 40mg calcigard during nite once a day. His pressure did not reduce consistently in the last month ie dropped from 190/95 to 165/85. But we changed it to calcigard 10mg thrice a day and it comes down to about 145/75. what is the best way to administer a pressure pill ? ie once 40mg or thrice 10mg and why is there a difference.?

Single dosage form is usually advocated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

Calciguard is best taken in an Extended Release/ER form.

The usual dose is 30- 60 mg per oral Once daily with or without food.

Hence, I advise 40 mg single dose in ER form.Please check with local brands.

In case, the BP continues to stay above 150/80 mm of Hg, it is advisable to escalate the dose to 60 mg after consulting your physician.

Divided doses offer no special advantage.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these dose modifications and ER brands of CALCIGUARD.
