Brief Answer:
Please see details below.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs. XXXX,

I can understand your concern for your son. Its a kind of tricky situation that you are facing. Making him do the play can increase his anxiety and fear and withdrawing him from the play will just help in maintaining the fears.

My answer will depend on the time duration when he is going to perform in the play. If it is soon enough, it will be better to withdraw and start treating him for his fears and anxiety.

If there is enough time (I am looking at more that 15-20 days), you can initiate the treatment now and participation in the play can be incorporated as part of treatment.

I would suggest that you consult a child psychiatrist for complete evaluation of your son. He might have other anxiety issues as well. Depending on that, he can be started on behavior therapy or play therapy and the symptoms dealt with accordingly.

I do hope that I was able to answer your query. Please let me know if you have any further query. I will be glad to help.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta
