Question: Hi dr,

My 2 year 10 months old daughter has been frequently suffering from cold, cough and sore throat over last 2 months. She coughs so forcefully and repeatedly which results in vomittings and makes her very tired and dull. She mostly gets the dry coughing , chest congestion with some runny nose. Also, when she's ill thick blackish/grey mucus is seen in her nostrils. Her appetite reduces drastically during sickness and she's scared of eating as it might result in vomittings. She also complains of stomach pain at times. Her weight has reduced from 12 kgs to 11.6 kgs.

When my daughter is not sick she's very active and cheerful. Please let me know what's the problem as I am extremely worried about her illness and well being. She has become very weak. What can I do to increase her immunity?

Brief Answer:
It is due to a viral respiratory tract infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking once again on HealthcareMagic.

Most often children suffer from respiratory tract infections due to viral causes and your daughter seems to have one of those. Usually these infections are associated with an allergic component which is responsible for the runny nose. Antibiotics are not helpful and irrespective of treatment it usually takes 5-7 days or more for recovery. Giving antiallergics like cetirizine should help. Also give steam inhalation. Water in form of vapor reaches deep inside and helps in diluting the cough and thus provides relief. The vomitings occur due to the cough irritating her throat and the steam inhalation should provide relief. It is quite usual for the appetite to come down during illnesses. You need not panic about that. I understand your apprehensions but you need to be patient.

Giving her colorful fruits and vegetables regularly in diet should help in boosting her immunity since those foods contain plenty of antioxidants. She has to eat well to overcome her weakness.

Hi dr,
Thanks for your reply. She also has molars emerging...can this also be a reason of weight loss? Is curd safe and can it be given during respiratory tract infection? Which foods to be avoided? Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
Answers given one by one

Detailed Answer:
The eruptions of the molars would not cause a weight loss.
Curd is safe to be given and can be given while she has a respiratory tract infection.
No specific food needs to be avoided. Cold temperatures need to be avoided however.

Brief Answer:
Wait and watch. She should soon be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Pan MPS might help. Give her curd along. Also give her ORS (oral rehydration solution) to make up for the salt and water lost during vomiting.
