Thanks for your query.

Dark coloured bleeding usually occurs due to entrapped decidua(shed inner lining of uterus) of the previous period.Due to long standing and degradation of the blood it results in altered brown to dark brown coloured bleed.

This is not serious , need not worry.Such bleeding can be seen occasionally without any underlying disease.The bleeding will stop spontaneously and do not affect the next cycle.

Also if you are sexually active , it would be safe to test for pregnancy as some times in pregnancy mild bleeding (usually not dark) after 2 weeks of a period occurs due to implantation of the foetus.
