Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: I am a diabetic for the last 2 years. My age is 54 years. The blood glucose level when I started medicine was 140/175 (Avg 7). Initially I was given Glucornorm SR 500 morng/eve. Gradually it has been increased to Glucornorm SR 1000 morng/eve. I am taking 1000 mg tablet twice daily for the last 6 months. The current level is 140/135. Normally my post food level is low. Is it safe to continue with this drug. Please advise.I had raised a query 23 hours ago. I still await an answer!

Brief Answer:
Continue current medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

Tab Gluconorm SR 1000mg contains Metformin 1000mg.
Metformin is the first line drug in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.
It act on decreasing insulin resistance which is the basic pathology of Type 2 Diabetes.
It is extremely rare for Metformin to cause low blood sugar level in hypoglycemic range (Usually below 70).
And also rarely have any major side effects.

I may suggest to continue current medicines.

Hope this helps you.

Is the current range to my Blood Glucose Level, i.e. fasting 138 and post food 135-145 in order. Or do I need to do reduce this level. Is it safe to live at this level on a long term basis.

Brief Answer:
Your blood sugar levels are in acceptable limit.

Detailed Answer:
Definitely your blood sugar levels are within acceptable limit.
HbA1c carries more value than Fasting & post-prandial blood sugar levels as a indicator of blood sugar control.
HbA1c value should be kept as low as possible.
In your case HbA1c around 7 with 8 years of Diabetes denote good Diabetes control.

Hope this helps you
