default
Posted on Mon, 12 May 2014
Question: my grandfather died from leukemia, and I am tired all the time. I would like to know the other symptoms. I also just started getting a smokers cough that wont go away. I have to get on the government health care on Monday to get blood work done. I work but I have no coverage. I am so worried about this. I also have shortness of breath. I have no lumps that I have noticed. I am just scared that I might have leukemia.

Brief Answer: Do a complete blood count and blood film! Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am sorry to hear about this tiredness and the history of your grandfather passing away due to leukemia. It is true that a family history of leukemia makes the chances of you having leukemia higher than in those who do not have a similar history in their families. However, it in no way says whether you would go on to have this. Your worries are real but there is so much lacking to make leukemia a likely cause of these symptoms Leukemia often presents with repeated infections, signs of anemia and bleeding disorders as the disease progresses. Swollen lymph nodes, night fevers , weight loss and loss of appetite are other common signs and symptoms of leukemia. Fatigue alone may be just a sign of low blood or some other thing. The best way to go on with this worry is to do a complete blood count and a blood film. These tests would be able to tell whether there is any abnormality with your blood cells suggestive of this or not. Also, your doctor would be able to probe into other possible causes of fatigue through a complete clinical encounter and maybe further laboratory testing. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to request for clarification and more information if need be. Thanks for using our services. Dr. Ditah, MD.

Brief Answer: Several possible causes Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. Fatigue has several possible causes. Only a complete clinical encounter and some laboratory investigations can shed more light on what the exact cause is. Some include anemia, hypothyroidism, depression, Liver disease, heart disease, lung disease, cancers, hypoglycemia, illness, electrolyte imbalance, vitamin deficiency, etc. I will like that you get the preliminary blood work done and we would be able to narrow down the list of possible causes to a few. At that time, we would be able to talk with more precision than now. I hope this helps. Feel free to request for ore clarifications if need be. I will also like to see your results for interpretation if you so desire. Dr. Ditah, MD.
