Question : My son was prescribed Librium 25 mg. twice a day for 5 days (a total of 10 pills) at the Emergency Room at the hospital. He had stopped drinking alcohol for five days, due to his four year drinking problem- and had a vey bad seizure. We also discovered that his primary care MD and neurologist aren't authorized to prescribe Librium. My Question is: is he in danger by stopping this med now. He is down to the last pill. We are not sure what to do? We also called the Emergency room, but they are not authorized to give refills. I gather we need a psychiatrist but we are not able to get an appointment for months. Thank you.

Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

In most of my patients I require to use librium for seven to 10 days and never less than five and more than 10 days. I think a calculated call can be taken to stop his librium but it should not be done without ruling out the risk of all alcohol related symptoms particularly delirium tremens.

I mean to say you should not do it on your own although the risk is not very high.
