What Causes A Small Bump On The Thumb?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Jun 2016
Question: I have a bump on my thumb. It's right on the second joint. Sometimes it hurts but most of the time it doesn't. The bump is half way between firm and spongy. When I manipulate the bump, I get the impression that there is fluid in there. It's not large....maybe 2-3 millimeters. It's red, but not warm to the touch. I've had it several weeks. It doesn't interfere with using my finger. Any ideas of what it could be? Maybe a cyst that can be aspirated? As mentioned, it's not causing problems, but it is unsightly and I would like to deal with it before I potentially experience issues. My mother and maternal grandmother both had osteoarthritis of the hands...just an fyi. Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Tenosynovitis/ganglion or synovial

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your, and an elucidate history and clear pictures.
To recapitulate: Female/55 - noted the Medical History, the Medications and family history - bump as explained by you and well depicted in the pictures you have provided ...

From the history and the pictures this lump looks to be a small ganglion or a synovial cyst.
The ganglion is arising from the lining of the tendons and the synovial cyst appears from synovium that is lining of the joint.
Both the conditions are benign and do not cause any harm as such.
Even if this is aspirated it will refill soon.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
