Posted on Mon, 21 Mar 2016
Question: Hello! To start, I am a 25yr old female, 125lbs and 5'6", normal blood pressure and heart rate, my question is, I have been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm an I just had a ultrasound done today but cant get the results for another week or so. I also have Celiac disease and Raynauds phenomenon. My question is, what could be causing the aneurysm? My new doctor is testing me for many connective tissue and autoimmune diseases but I want to know if there was any specifically causing AAA. ( other symptoms including 20lb unintended weightloss over 6mo, loss of muscle function they feel very weak, severe lower back and hip pain, aching joints in knees and fingers and fingers seize up) Thanks!

Brief Answer:
cause for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The most crucial and important cause for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterized by the deposition of fat material on inner walls of the arteries. Hypertension is also a further contributory cause towards aneurysm formation. Going deep into histological causes, its termed to be related to abnormal connective tissue turnover in the media and adventitia layer of the vessel especially in individuals who are less than 50 years of age. Smoking is a known risk factor for AAA.

Thank you for the quick reply! When you say smoking, is fhag limited to ciggarettes or does marijuana count too? I smoke medical marijuana for my pain management and insomnia, is this dangerous or would you recommend maybe not smoking it and injesting it through food instead? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

Smoking in all its forms including marijuana is considered hazardous in relation to cardiovascular conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysm and should be avoided. Changing the route of drug does not affect the outcome. Alternatives should be sought to marijuana.
