Question: Hi,
I was experiencing nausea and votting a week ago. Checked in to a walk-in urgent care. Did all types of test by a PA. Supposed to be notified by the office regarding my blood work today. I have been taking Ondansetron ODT 4mg tablet every 6 hours for nausea. I have not been eating or drinking much. Do not have bowel movement over 72 hours now. Is it serious?

Brief Answer:
little in would have little out, when appetite improves so should bowel mov

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most common cause of acute nausea and vomiting is infection of the gastrointestinal tract by a virus or bacteria.

Viral infections are more common than bacterial. Very rarely is acute nausea and vomiting related to a more serious condition unless there are additional symptoms.
Additional concerning symptoms would be: (1)persistent vomiting/nausea with no change
(2)fever
(3)abdominal pain- persisting or worsening, persisting abdominal tenderness on palpating the abdomen

In general the symptoms due to infection can last 1 to 2 weeks till there is gradual decrease in symptoms and improvement of appetite.

It may or may not be associated with diarrhea.

Since you are not eating well because of the symptoms, it would be expected that the bowel movements would decrease- there is not much to come out since little is going in

If the nausea is decreasing, you may want to consider decreasing the ondansetron to see how you are without it.

If your symptoms are decreasing then you can start increasing your foods slowly, using small amount of dry foods first.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
