What Causes An Abnormal, Surge Of Energy Feeling In Throat?

Question: I have a feeling of a surge of energy go through my throat. Usually lasts a few seconds and is not related to change in heart rate, being hot or anything else. Recently had stress test, holter and echo and tested normal. Saw electrophysiologist and was told all was normal. Being treated for Graves and TSH, T3 and T4 in normal range. Perimenopausal with recent FSH at 59. Not on hormone replacement. I am not aware of having GERD but do have some stress and anxiety that I am trying to control with diet, sleep, exercise and meditation. Any idea what is causing this strange feeling?

I can understand your concern. The feelings like surge of energy going through throat or weird sensation through throat can occur due to anxiety. Even though it is not related to rapid heart rate, hot cold sensation or any other sensation still anxiety and stress could be the cause for these symptoms. Anxiety can be the reason for these symptoms because-

- Your heart tests like stress test, Holter, ECHO all came normal.

- Electrophysiologist also says that there is nothing abnormal.

- You are on thyroid medicines for Graves but TSH, T3 and T4 are in normal range.

- FSH is also in normal range for post menopausal female (25-134) and in my opinion this is not the cause for your symptom.

Apart from anxiety other possible cause (though less likely) for these sensations in throat is thyroid abnormality as you are being treated for Graves disease. If possible even though tests came normal still get repeat Free T3, T4 and TSH (fT3, fT4 and TSH) tests done. If they comes in higher range then we can conclude that persistent hyperthyroidism is resulting in aggravation of anxiety which is causing these symptoms.

So in my opinion anxiety is causing this strange feeling. Treatment of anxiety will help in reduction of this sensation. Medicines like low dose benzodiazepines as Clonazepam or Etizolam or beta blockers as Propranolol can help to reduce these abnormal sensations and will relieve anxiety and stress. You can visit your doctor for evaluation and prescription. Apart from medicines relaxation exercises also have almost same efficacy as that of medicines in anxiety.
