Question : Hi,

I am 55 years old. Male and generally healthy. Tonight during intercourse with my wife....it was a little bit rough, but not wild...I looked down after about 5 minutes and saw blood on my penis. We though it was her...but tuned out I am bleeding fairly profusely from the urethra ....still bleeding 30 minutes late...not other symptoms, I did not ejaculate...this is the first time I have EVER seen blood coming out the end of my penis in 55 years...was thinking I should go to the emergency room...not sure what to do...help if you have any idea...thanks!OK...I have been lying down on my back typing for about 15 minutes...the towel I was stopping the blood with does not show any new Blood....I looked at the Urethra opening and no more blood is coming out, but then again, I have not stood up or tried to go pee....Thought it would be best to stay lying down horizontal....will stand up in a few minutes.

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have bleeding from urethra during intercourse for the first time .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Did you pass urine freely after this incidence?
2) Do you have pain in penis?
3) Do you have swelling of the penis ?

The bleeding is likely to be from the trivial injury to urethra due to dry ,rough sex.

Please apply tight pressure bandage as a first aid treatment ,drink plenty of water and wait for 1hour till you pass urine ,Most of the time bleeding stops once you pass urine.

If problem persists you may need to go ER for further evaluation .

Take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexime along with anti inflammatory medicine like Diclofenac twice daily .

Ensure to drink more water and avoid sexual activities till it gets cured completely.

Thank you. In answer to your other questions / follow up questions:

1. I have not tried to pass urine yet...the blood scared the shit our of me. Blood was deep, bright red...seemed thick and a little clotty, but was definitely fresh blood....I will try in another 30 minutes to pee...drinking water now.
2. I do not have any significant pain. During the bleeding, there was slight discomfort in the Urethra area...
3. I do not have any swelling.

Overall no other symptoms, but slight discomfort. Blood has stopped, even when I stood up. Penis looks normal. Looked into Urethra to see if there was a cut visible...none seen.

I think there was a total of about 2-3 oz of blood total between my wifes vagina and my continued bleeding.....

I will try to pee and report back in about 20 minutes...

Even though you do not have any problem continue taking antibiotic like Cefexime along with anti inflammatory drug like Diclofenac twice daily for 2 weeks.

Get prescription from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water and avoid sexual encounters for 10 days.

Injured urethra may get narrowed (Stricture formation ) over a period of time ,and will cause difficulty in passing urine .Consult qualified Urologist moment you start getting difficulties in passing urine.
