What Causes Bleeding From Wound Site Post Hernia Surgery?

Question : My significant other just had hernia surgery on 1-16-14. All seemed well until two days ago when he started bleeding from the incision . If he lays on his side he bleeds heavy. If he lays on his back the bleeding is not as bad but still bleeds when he gets up. What can I do? I put dressings on him, and make sure he is getting plenty of fluids. His scrodum is enlarged and red. I tried to get him to go to the emergency room, since his Dr. Is out of town. He just told me he fell two days ago and his ribs are hurting .

Bleeding from wound site after surgery done 12 months ago is no way normal and likely a deranged bleeding profile underneath. His doctor may be out of town but ER is always there to sort it out and it looks like an emergency , as if such bleeding needs assessment of complete bleeding profile to make sure its nothing serious. Also he felled and that could be the reason for the ribs pain or fracture but a 12 months old would site is unlikely to be bleeding that severely with just a fall.

I believe your friend needs immediate workup and follow up to rule out any bleeding diathesis and provide immediate replacement of needed clotting factors either in guise of fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and platelets.
