What Causes Blood In Urine Following A Fall?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I am 66 year old male and had slight blood in urine last Friday night once (following a fall ---slipped on wet grass on a hill and fell on hip and shoulder) but not again. It showed again this morning and this afternoon. I have an appointment with my urologist at his first opening but not until next Tuesday. I have no pain and no other symptoms. I also bike on stationary bike in spin class and had long workout Friday and Monday...a factor? I was treated for prostate cancer in 2010 and after radioactive seed implants my PSA is 0.4. Questions 1. Is it ok to wait until next Tuesday for the appointment? 2. What should I do or not do in the mean time? Thanks.

Thank you for contacting HCM with yoru health care concerns

You have recently noted blood in your urine following a fall. You have also been diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated with radioactive seeds. The blood is a common thing following a fall and since you started doing the spin class this may have exacerbated the bleeding slightly. All this conditions can cause bleeding in the urogenital tract and should not be too worrisome. I recommend that you keep your appointment next week. He should do a good overall exam over your GU tract to determine the source of bleeding. He will order another UA to check for blood and it maybe negative. That will be good news as the source of trauma will have corrected itself. If still positive further investigation will probably proceed including a cystoscopy or kidney ultrasounds. I also recommend that you stop any medications that can cause bleeding like aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen.

In summary
1. Trauma caused hematuria
2. Bicycle riding may exacerbate bleeding
3. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen
4. Keep appointment with urology
