Brief Answer:
Ultrasound should be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Bleeding or spotting in first trimester can be due to subchorionic haemorrhage or abortion.
If you had an episode of brown spotting, you should get an ultrasound done to assess the fetal viability and well being.
Most likely it is due to the old subchorionic haemorrhage, however missed abortion should be ruled out.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
