What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting In Early Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Oct 2015
Question: Hi I'm six weeks three days pregnant however the last four days I've had some brown discharge or spotting and my breasts no longer feel as sore and I don't feel as bloated. So I'm concerned I had another missed miscarriage. I had one before six months ago. I read it's about a 1% chance of a missed miscarriage but what are the chances of 2 in a row? I went to the emergency room two days ago but they took my blood and said my betas were still high so dismissed me- but wouldn't they remain high with a missed m/c? I have a u/s scheduled for my 7th week but wondering what the chances of having 2 missed m/c in a row are. I have headaches and I feel queezy, probably with frustration for having to wait when I think I lost it. Hope to hear from you!

Brief Answer:
Recurrent miscarriages should be investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Brown spotting in early pregnancy can be due to missed abortion or bleeding around the fetus( subchorionic haemorrhage).
Loss of pregnancy symptoms like engorged breasts and bloating are more suggestive of missed abortion, however ultrasound should be done to confirm the diagnosis.
Recurrent miscarriages are seen in few patients, approximately3-5% of the females of the reproductive age group.
There are several causes of recurrent miscarriages , for which one needs to be investigated like:
1. Deranged blood sugar levels
2. Hypothyroidism
3. Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
4. Autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus
5. Chromosomal anomalies in one or both the partners
6. Idiopathic( no cause is found in around50% patients with recurrent miscarriages, even after extensive investigations).
If you have repeat miscarriage this time, then I will suggest you to get investigated for after6 weeks of the termination of pregnancy, to find the cause and get appropriate treatment.
I will further reassure you that the chance of next successful pregnancy after recurrent miscarriages is 60-70%, so be positive and hopeful.
Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
