Brief Answer:
Regarding vaginitis:

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms.XXXX,

Burning sensation of the vaginal tissues in someone who is postmenopausal can be from an infection or from atrophic vaginitis, due to lower estrogen levels.

Yeast infections, which are really overgrowths of yeast rather than a real infection, can cause burning and irritation around the vagina. Often there is a white curdy discharge that has an odor.

For this problem, a non prescription anti yeast cream can be bought at any drug store. An example of this is Monistat. You apply this inside the vagina for the given number of days (the number of days varies depending on the preparation).

Atrophic vaginitis is the other common possibility. When there is less estrogen, the vaginal (and also urethral) tissues are not as robust and can get irritated and feel dry and burning. If this is the problem, then see your doctor about it. A more natural form of estrogen cream (Esterase rather than Premarin) used either inside or around the vagina can increase the health of the tissues and resolve dryness. If your burning sensation is associated with dryness, this would be the way to go. Estrogen cream does not have the risky side effects that oral estrogen does in postmenopausal women.

There are less common causes of vaginitis in someone who is 68 yrs old, such as STDs. With these there is usually discharge and odor.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
