What Causes Calcification In The Brain?

Please find details below
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. The brain is made of many structures and calcification in the brain can occur in normal and abnormal conditions.
2. With advancing age some of the areas where calcification might be developed are the choroid plexus, basal ganglia, pineal gland, dura and the vessel walls and these calcifications are normal. This is an age related process due to benign calcium deposition.
3. There are many more causees for abnormal calcification including infections and tumors. However I understand you are asking about calcification due to advancing age.
4. Though the age related calcification can start appearing after the age of 60 years, it is usually seen in most people over 65 to 70 years of age.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
1. There is no specific change in motor skills and brain functions related to calcification of normal brain structures.
2. As such a cognitive decline is seen in most people after the age of 80 to 85 years and this is not due to the calcification process.
3. When such calcification is intense and more than usual like in the basal ganglia and important nuclei and with the clinical features of motor and cognitive impairment, other conditions that occur in the elderly related to motor and cognitive decline must be thought of.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
