Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: Good morning Dr.
I noticed this morning the color of my poo (stool) was 2 different colors. Is this normal and from the pic I am sending do the colors appear to be normal?
I am a heavy drinker (a 1/2 pint of Vodka a day ) and thought perhaps it was my liver trying to tell me something but I have no other adverse symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Your stool color seems to be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

From the photo you have attached, your stool color is acceptable and does not indicate any problems. Please note that stool color can vary depending of bile amount in it, intestinal bacteria and time which it spends inside intestines.
That is why at the beginning stool can be darker and next part can be lighter.

In case of liver problems, you may have dark urine, itchy skin, enlarged veins on abdomen instead of stool color change.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Hi Dr,
Can you please tell me what the most " common" symptoms of ascites are?
I feel full after only a small amount of eating and seem to have no appetite and feel full after a small meal!
Is that perhaps due to my water intake I drink daily and or the amount of calories in the alcohol I drink daily?
I have read that alcohol consumption (amount of calories ) will cause that problem!.
NO blood in stool is noticed and urine is clear.
No pain in shoulder etc. just feeling of blaotness.

Brief Answer:
Ascites can give no symptoms at all.

Detailed Answer:
As in abdominal cavity there is pretty much of free space, mild ascites can give no symptoms at all. Most common symptom is enlarged abdomen with protuberant umbilicus. Only massive ascites can cause compression and lead to bowels problems and breathing problems.
Feeling full after a meal can be rather caused by some stomach problem or large intestine problem more than ascites.
Alcohol is calories rich indeed. But this is not a problem at all. Liver destruction due to its toxicity is the main reason of all side effects it causes.

Regards.

G/morning DR.
Thanks for your reply!
Having no protuberant umbilicus obvious and no spider veins and having "normal" stool and urine color am I safe to "assume" that my liver is not damaged at this point?
Will cutting back on my alcohol daily help resolve or perhaps resolve the problem?

Brief Answer:
It seems that your liver is not seriously damaged.

Detailed Answer:
Well, you may assume that there is no serious damage to your liver. But for sure it is affected by an alcohol. But it is possible to drink for many many years and liver still wont give any signs of damage. Its because it can greatly regenerate.
Yes, cutting back an alcohol can help with liver condition for sure.
