What Causes Constant Pain In The Right Side Of The Head?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Dec 2016
Question: I have really bad headache, it even woke me up last night. I have been taking Tylenol to suppress the pain. It has been going on for about 2 weeks, maybe 2-3 times a week. My right side of my head would hurt, including my neck and my right eye. I had the same problem about 1.5-2 years ago, when I was under a lot of stress and lost sleep because of anxiety. I was prescribed with tension headache medicine when I consulted a doctor, I am not sure if it is the same tension headache that's happening this time, or could it be a migraine? Can you please advice?

Brief Answer:
The history suggest migraine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

I can understand your concern. The headache is occurring unilaterally on right side and is associated with pain in eyes and neck. Its present since about 2 weeks and is occurring in episodes. I am not sure about the headache which occurred about 2 years ago but the history of your current symptoms is pointing towards migraine.

Tension type of headache usually occurs in presence of significant stressor. The headache occurs as dull heaviness or cause band like discomfort more in occipital areas. While migraine cause headache more in unilateral frontotemporal areas.

But since the headache is also present in night so I'd advise you to visit a doctor and if possible get proper evaluation done.

OTC medicines like Tylenol can help to reduce the symptoms on SOS basis but if that persists then proper treatment would be needed. Avoid excess tea, coffee or alcohol for few days. Use sunglasses in day time. Have at least 7 hours sleep in night which will definitely reduce the pain.

Thanks. Take care.
