What Causes Coughing Up Blood After Swimming?

Question: After falling 60ft and landing flat on my back in water I began coughing up blood. I went to the doctor and they took x-rays and sent me home saying I was fine and would be okay. I am still however coughing up blood and I wanted to know whether or not it would be safe for me to smoke?
Brief Answer:
No,please don't smoke. But do have bleeding evaluated.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
This sounds like a significant trauma you sustained.
I do not recommend smoking. Your body is not back to normal, and cigarette smoke places a very stress on the body thru irritation of the respiratory system and can also delay healing.
I am concerned that you are still coughing up blood. How much blood are you coughing up in the course of a day (in teaspoons, tablespoons), and how long has it been since your fall?

Around 1:00 pm today. So about 8 hours ago
Brief Answer:
Watch and wait.
Detailed Answer:
I expect any tinge of blood in mucus should resolve by tomorrow. If not, go in to be seen. Blood in coughed up sputum can be from blunt trauma anywhere along the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. If you are otherwise feeling fine, and there isn't much blood, you can let it go for a little while. But it should be healed up by 24 hours.
