What Causes Crawling Sensation On The Skin In A Diabetic?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Mar 2017
Question: I have diabetes (type 2) and have recently changed the type of insulin I have to take. Now on Lantis. Since changing medication and going off the birth control pill, I have had a problem with skin pain. No lumps. bumps or marks but my skin feels like it is crawling and it is a horrible sensation. Could this be from the insulin or going off the birth control pill. I am 53.

Brief Answer:
It could be from going off birth control pills

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM.
While most women are familiar with the common symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, many are unaware of menopause's effects on the skin. Experienced by many women during menopause, skin problems are closely linked to the hormone changes that occur during this transition.
The most important is the low estrogen level.
After going off birth control pills that contain estradiol, the symptoms begin.
A small percentage of menopausal women report the symptom of formication, a specific type of paresthesia characterized by creepy, crawling sensations on the skin.
So it is most probably caused by hormonal causes rather than insulin.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

Brief Answer:
Discuss with your physician about HRT:

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back!
I would recommend to check the estrogen level and discuss with your treating physician about the possibility to use Hormone replacement therapy (contain lower doses of estrogen than birth contraceptive pills) as the symptoms are due to the low estrogen level. That is why they began after giving off birth control.
There are also some prevention tips:
-Diet – include essential fatty acids – like Omega 3 found in sardines, salmon, soy, safflower, flax, walnuts and fortified eggs.
-Avoid hot showers and baths
-Sunscreen – keep your skin health with a broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF of 15 or higher. Avoid tanning beds.

Hope the information will help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
