Question: I stopped taking birth control about 2 months ago . Last period was right on time. This period is 9 days late. I have had brown gel like discharge before expected period and time when I was supposed to have period. Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Do a urine pregnancy test

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX, I have gone through your question and understand your concern.

Stopping birth control pills 2 months ago will not have any effect on these periods 2 months later. Delay in periods with brownish discharge can be due to pregnancy. I suggest you to get a urine pregnancy test.

If it is negative, then do consult an OBGYN specialist to rule out other causes of delayed periods (hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian disease).

If the test is positive, you should consult OBGYN specialist and get a ultrasound done to rule out missed abortion, ectopic pregnancy or any haemorrhage around the fetus, which are the cause of brown spotting in pregnancy.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back to us for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
Regards,
Dr Deepti Verma.
