What Causes Diarrhea With Weakness In The Upper Body And Arms?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: This morning I am experiencing diarrhea and a feeling of weakness in my upper body and arms. No fever (I took my temperature twice, 98.0 and 97.6 F). No cramps. No vomiting.
These symptoms don't seem to match the symptoms for stomach flu or food poisoning.
Also, I have experienced the feeling of weakness in my upper body and arms on and off recently, without the intestinal problems.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Can be transient ischemic stroke sign(minor stroke).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query
There are basically two possibilities-
1)It can be a sign of ongoing minor stroke as weakness is limited to upper part of body(localised).A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a stroke lasts only a few minutes. It happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly blocked. Symptoms of a TIA are like other stroke symptoms, but do not last as long. They happen suddenly and are usually off and on in nature.
I would recommend you to go for MRI brain stroke protocol to rule out the possibilities of ischemia or mild hemorrhage.
2))You are suffering from gastroenteritis. I would initially suggest you to go for a test called stool routine and microscopy. Presence of bacteria or protozoa in stool can be tested. Some times infestation by toxic bacteria's destroys natural gut flora(good bacteria like lactobacillus) and can cause loose motion etc.Gastroenteritis usually presents with symptoms like bloating ,belching loosestolls vomiting nausea weekness etc. However its not necessary that all symptoms are always present in every patient. So just because you are not feeling nausea and vomiting does not means that you don't have gastroenteritis.

-Take a probiotic daily for few days along with Metamucil 2 tsp before going to bed to add bulk to stools.
Take a good quality probiotic like Econorm three times a day for atleast a week.
Medications that can be discussed with your gastroenterologist are-
-Antidiarrhoeal medicines Loperamide 4mg stat fpollowed by 2mg twice daily to control the symptoms of diarrhoea.
In case stool routine and sensitivity is positive for bacteria or protozoa therapy with cefixime and ornidazole could be taken for 7 days.

As of now i would strongly recommend you to visit the nearest emergency department and get the basic tests done.

Regards.
