What Causes Difficulty In Recalling New Words Or Names?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: What do you think could be the cause/nature of my memory problems. I'm 21 and about 2 years ago started struggling to remember new words and names. Now i'm not sure if I have always been like this and I just started noticing it more or not. Anyway, my memory for daily events (conversations etc) is good to great. I just struggle to remember names and new vocab. I've done a few tests and done poorly in some and excellent in others.

Brief Answer:
Possible causes of memory problems listed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for being at Healthcaremagic.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Psychological tests usually quantify the degree of memory affected, but doesn't give much details about the underlying causes.

Conditions that may affect memory processes of young adults include:

- head trauma (even a minor one)

- stress and anxiety disorder, or depression

- side effects of drugs

- vitamin B12 deficiency

- hypothyroidism

- brain lesions

There is need to assess further these conditions, by tests also.

Tests needed for this purpose include brain MRI, blood levels of vitamin B12 and thyroid gland function tests.

These tests need prescription by your primary care Doctor.

Stress disorder should be evaluated also as a possible cause of the memory problems.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Take care.

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely ( almost impossible ) at this age.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Both, Alzheimer's and mild cognitive impairment are conditions that are encountered very rarely ( I must say theorycally ) in young people.

Depression, in the other hand, can cause and mimic a number of conditions, including cognitive abilities.

Hope I helped you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.
