What Causes Dry Eyes And Mouth During Menopause?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: I have celiac diagnosed am 50 years old and going through menopause. I have been experiencing severe dry eyes, and feeling dehydrated also very dry mouth. my blood sugar is good . Any clue what this is? I also was on bioidentical progesterone for 15 years and not tolerating it any longer it seems like I get adverse affects now that I have celiac. I try not to use bi oestrogen because the doctor says progesterone needs to be used with it. My question is number one could this be related to long term progesterone use and or is it the celiac making me reject it? I initially feel good taking the progesterone for 2 or 3 days then get very bad headache and feel horrible. I have low blood pressure and was taking a little sea salt therapy for adrenals recomended by my doctor. Could this be lower estrogen causing the dehydrating effects or celiac making it worse??

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms may be caused by Sjogren's syndrom.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

In my opinion you may suffer from Sjogren's syndrome.

This is a condition which causes dry eyes and a dry mouth and is also an autoimmune disorder.

Lots of people with celiac disease have a diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome. Women are much more likely to have Sjogren's syndrome. Usually is diagnosed in people older than 40 years.

I would order for base line:
- blood test,
- presence of antibodies common in Sjogren's syndrome in the blood,
- eye test that doctor will measure the dryness of your eyes.
Your local doctors will know about this test.

If some of this tests will be wrong in the next step you should have a lip biopsy to detect the presence of inflammatory cells.

You have asked also about hormones. The menopause is the most common time for a diagnosis to be made so there is a possibility that falling levels of estrogen might in some way disrupt the immune system. However it is not well known.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
