Question : Hello Doctor. My son is 4 years old (weight is 14.5 kgs). He is running a fever of around 100-102 every six hours since Monday evening. The doctor has advised Mefkind Forte. He was on medication (antibiotics) last week for tonsils. The fever occurred on the last day of antibiotics. What could it be? Throat, chest is clear. He is active and eating well. The doctor has advised to go for blood and urine test (to test for typhoid) if the fever does not subside.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Give steam inhalation to your child. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. You need to give Mefkind Forte (mefenamic acid) to bring down the temperature. Also use tepid sponging. Giving some antiallergic like cetirizine will help. Give Levolin only if there is wheezing or respiratory distress.

Please be patient, it should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days. If it does not, typhoid would need to be ruled out. Urine test is for urinary tract infection which is another possible option.
