Brief Answer:
sulfur smell from urine

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about having urine that smells like rotten eggs. This smell is usually associated with sulfur dioxide. There are certain foods that will increase the smell like cabbage and broccoli. If you are eating any of this type of food that may be the reason for the smell. Also medications can also cause a change in the smell most likely is furosemide and diuretics. Also antibiotics can cause a strong smell. The good news is despite the smell there are no dangers to your health from this. As long as you are monitored by your doctor with regular urinalysis and blood electrolytes you have nothing to be worried about. I know this is not quite what you wanted to hear but there is no reason to be overly concerned and worried just over the smell of urine. The most important thing is that your blood chemistry, kidney functions and urinalysis are all normal

Funny thing is I had pneumonia in March put on 10 days ABX the urine smell went away for approx two months. Leads me to believe the ABX cured this problem for two months. The smell would make anyone want to vomit. It is nothing that I am eating. Is that the only thing I should worry about or should my IntMed Dr do any other tests on my urine besides a dip stick?

Brief Answer:
urine smell

Detailed Answer:
I would be sure to ask your internist to run a regular urinalysis and a full chemistry test including liver and kidney tests. If these are all normal then I would be less inclined to believe anything dangerous is happening.

It is interesting that the antibiotics helped. This maybe due to a change in your bacteria in your inguinal area. The change may have caused an offending bacteria to die off but it regrew shortly thereafter. So my suspicions then are you have a bacteria that is causing your foul smell but it is not causing any dangerous infections. It would be difficult for a physician to write an antibiotic for this reason.

I would have liked a remedy to my problem whether it be a natural remedy or something. Should not have to live with this without someway of correcting. Very embarrassing!!!

Brief Answer:
Nothing you can do

Detailed Answer:
There is really nothing you can do about the smell. I can only recommend drinking plenty of fluids so your urine is clear and not yellow. This will reduce some of the smell. Sorry there is not much more we can offer you.
