What Causes Gagging And Vomiting After Having Food?

Question: Thank you! My husband, who is 79 years old has begun to have gagging problems--it is usually after a meal when he is either eating yogurt or ice cream---his throat will gurggle and sometimes he throws up. We have seen a gastroenterologist--perhaps Barrett's Esophagus---but no--Gastro said it was an ulcer and gave him pantoprozole as well as another, much newer medication. No help at all. My husband does not have a hietal hernia and we don't know where to turn for possible help. Have you suggestions of a type of diagnostician which we should see?

Brief Answer:
To stop all dairy products

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and specific history.

The history is very specific - it says Male of 79 years has gagging - after meal with '' yogurt or ice cream''. - throat gurgles and sometimes throws-up - Gastro says an ulcer - under treatment without help - suggestion -

Madam,
The history of yogurt and ice cream enhancing the problem is suggestive that these and such products are being tolerated at the moment and hence the problem. The possibility is that your husband has developed intolerance to milk proteins.

The possible help can be had by stopping milk and milk products.
I am hopeful that this alone helps.
You can also note any other foods or beverages which might have enhanced this problem and requesting you to hold them too.

You already had taken an opinion of a Gastroenterologist and I hope Endoscopy has also been done as your history mentions absence of hiatal hernia.

I was just wondering whether the patient needs a second opinion of a neurologist by the mentioning of the word ''gagging'', as there is a possibility of a neurological problem in a few patients without much of the other symptoms.

I hope this answer helps you to get the problem solved, mere stopping the dairy products may help.

I will be happy to get your feedback, wishing Him the best possible recovery.
Please feel free to ask for more or if you feel there is a gap-of-communication.
Wishing you both a happy healthy new year.
