Question : I have recently noticed a hard bump on the first joint of my left index finger. It is about 1/4 inch in diameter and painless. No color but about 1/8 inch high

From your description most probable explanation is a ganglion cyst.
Its a benign lesion connected with a tendon and filled with clear fluid. It does NOT turn into a cancer.
It can be removed if causes pain.
Ultrasound can confirm it.
