What Causes Heart Palpitations While Suffering From Anxiety?

6 months ago i was feeling fatigue and stressed because of work pressure and one day when i was going on bike to office, suddenly a vehicle came to me all of sudden and my heart just started beating so fast and i also got shortness of breathing. I was panicked and immediately i went to the hospital and doctors had done some tests and said everything fine. But later when i came back to home i searched about my symptoms in internet i got scared and i got anxiety since then. Now recently i had heart palpitations for few minutes and i had scared again and went heart hospital near by. Doctor had done 2d echo and ecg and said that i have mild aml prolapse+ and gave me ivazine 5(twice daily) medicine. Soon after i heard this thing my anxiety become more again. When i had 2d echo 6 months ago mitral valve was normal, but now it is showing mild aml prolapse. Which report do i believe. Both tests were done in different hospitals. I was so scared right now. Please help me what to do. I'm also taking ayurvedic medicine to control my anxiety. Can i take this medicine too? and can you suggest me a good cardiologist in XXXXXXX so that i can get it tested again ?

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic
Your description is highly suggestive of Anxiety
Anaemia / Anxiety / Alcohol / Tobacco (smoking) / Caffeine (too much tea, coffee, cola) / Fever / Infection / Pain / Stress / Thyroid / electrolytes especially calcium, magnesium / Medicines like Phenylephrine used for ‘cold’; Salbutamol used for asthma and so on – are some of the common causes of palpitation… Rarely is it related to heart itself! – abnormal nerve paths in the heart (bypass tracts) or disease of the conduction system may be responsible!
Many cases of palpitation are benign, especially when associated with normal ECHO and may not require treatment, If you also have symptoms like blurred vision, dizziness, loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, chest pain along with this, you need urgent work up
No cause to be seriously concerned about the Mitral Valve Prolapse. It is often seen in many normal people. It is just extra tissue in the valve and is safe most of the times / its detection by examination (Stethoscope, even ECHO) may vary depending on the volume of the left ventricle (lower chamber) at the given moment – for example, it may be obvious on standing, but not heard on lying down!
We cannot comment on Ayurvedic medicine. I suggest you choose one system of medicine and stick to it – to avoid complications like drug interaction
There are several multi-speciality tertiary care hospitals in XXXXXXX – I have heard of XXXXXXX Hrudalaya and it is a good one…
HOLTER (24 to 48 hour ambulatory monitoring) may have to be done to analyse and plan for further management, if a routine ECG does not show. It may also detect silent (no symptom) ischemia.
A few laboratory tests may also be done...
If there are no clues and if the problem is still bothering to the extent of interfering with life style, there are advanced investigations of increasing complexity – Electro Physiological Studies (EPS) > it resembles angio – a catheter is put inside the heart / electrical activity recorded / stimulation and suppression tests are carried out / suitable medicine tested and so on. There are advanced treatment modalities - like ablation (thermal or radio-frequency), which could be done during EPS. Though the test is the gold standard, it is INVASIVE and hence is not generally done unless there are compelling indications. This super-speciality expert is called ELECTRO-PHYSIOLOGIST.
The treating doctor may suggest them depending on need, based on his assessment of the situation.
Good luck
God bless you
