What Causes High Calcium Level In Body?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Apr 2014
Question: I'm a 55 year old woman and was told by my family doctor to stop taking calcium pills as I had to much calcium in my blood. I just take the normal dosage, twice a day. I don't understand after being told for years to take calcium why I should stop now. Does my body make enough of it's own or is it not absorbing it? And if it is not absorbing it, why wouldn't it. I have severe spinal stenosis and severe arthritis in my back and have been getting injections for 3 years. ( also arthritis in my hands). Not sure if this has anything to do with it. I was also told to stop taking my anti inflammatory prescription and vitamin D. My kidney functions is a little sluggish & has been for a few years.

Brief Answer: Follows. Detailed Answer: Dear Madam, Thank you for posting your query on HCM. Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that sometimes when calcium levels are high or the renal functions are slightly sluggish it is advisable to stop the calcium for some time and then start the replacement after monitoring the the serum calcium levels . Otherwise there is a possibility of renal stones . Generally it is now advisable to take calcium 500 mg once a day . Vitamin D levels should also be monitored because it is a fat soluble vitamin and can accumulate in body if overdosed . Antiinflammatory drugs are also known to worsen kidney functions so your treating doctor must have stopped it . Take care. Dr. Shruti
