What Causes Increase In BP Levels At Night?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: Question about my blood pressure and the medicine I am currently taking.

My blood pressure is good during the day (averages 125/86) but come evening/night it rises to about 145/105.

Currently I am taking 10mg with a 25mg of a diuretics in the morning.

I don't understand the reason for such a spike. So the doctor just add an additional dose of 5mg of amlodipine at night. Is this effective?? I thought the maximum dose is 10mg a day. Also, should I really be concerned with my rising blood pressure in the evening if it is good the rest of the day?

Brief Answer:
You should not be concerned for this evening rise B.P.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to H.C.M.

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

This evening/night raising of blood pressure can be due to posture change usually from standing to lying down.

You should not be concerned for this evening rise Blood pressure because these few peaks of slightly raised blood pressure are not significant ( Average reading for a day is best criteria) and these are completely controllable .

Your Amlodipine dose is high than a usual dose provided by medical practitioners

I would advise you to follow these steps -

1) Decrease salt in diet and Decrease fatty foods.

2) Regular exercise for at least 30 minutes and 4 to 5 days in week.

3) Amlodipine 10mg with a 25mg of a diuretics in the morning.

4) Alprazolam 0.25 mg at bed time.

5 ) Blood pressure charting 12 hourly.

6) Review after 3 days/ sos.

Hope this answers your question.
