What Causes Itching All Over Body?

Question: I am a 55 year old white woman. I am 5'5 and weigh 140 lbs. Last year I went to a dermatologist twice and an allergist twice about excessive itching all over my body - mostly back and arms. I tried creams, lotions, oatmeal baths every thing. Nothing has worked. In December while on vacation I collapsed with kidney failure. It was reversed and I am pretty much back to normal though kidney function not normal -- I have no real restrictions. They thought it was an allergic reaction to taking my mother's quinine for leg cramps. I don't think it was. I will never take it again, but it was not the first time I took it. I think it didn't help that I was tired and dehydrated. The itching is driving me crazy and I feel like no one is listening. The doctor tells me it's normal as we age... I have always had oily skin and it is literally flaking off. I am clawing myself all the time. Do you think it is kidney related? I also get frequent uti's and have had this awful achy pelvic sensation (very embarrassing area) for 2 years and my gyno told me to put Vaseline on. Please help.

Brief Answer: Itching Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Itching can occur in case of renal failure due to several reasons. As the renal failure advances the skin gets dry , once you scratch it , then it becomes a vicious cycle and you get more itching. High Uric Acid blood levels. High levels of serum creatinine. High levels of Parathyroid hormone or PTH. High Calcium and phosphorus product. The above levels can be tested in laboratory under guidance of your nephrologist. Also you should meet a skin specialist to help you to identify any unrelated skin condition. Anti allergic, antihistaminic will help you. But please do not scratch because if yo once start to scratch then you will not be able to stop. Best wishes. if any further query please write-in
