What Causes Itching In Ears And Eyes Of An Infant?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: Good day - my baby is almost 7 months old and has been scratching her ears and eyes for the past 5 weeks, I have started to give her Allergex elixir at night (2ml) once off otherwise she keeps waking up to scratch her face and ears. I don't think it can be healthy to keep giving this to her but don't know how else to help her. She has silent reflux and is on NAN lactose free formula but I add some Nestargel to this, don't know if her milk could cause the itchiness? I put Vaseline on and behind her ears. She went to a homeopath and is on drops for her tummy. The homeopath said to use calomine lotion for the itchiness but it doesn't seem to work.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,

Babies occasionally scratch their ears and eyes. The common reasons are

1. It could be normal: When babies are sleepy or wake up from sleep they tend to scratch thier eyes and ears.

2. Presence of seborrhoeic Dermatitis of scalp: This could cause the itching

3. Allergy to dust or food allergy

In majority of cases its normal, If the following criteria are fulfilled then there is no cause for concern and its likely to be normal

1. No excessive watering or redness in eyes

2. No discharge from ear

3. No redness of ears

4. No scaling of skin

If there are no other associated signs of inflammation like redness or excessive watering then it could be normal.

I would suggest the following

1. Oil massage everyday

2. Daily bath : Use baby body wash to remove all the oil traces from skin(presence of residual oil in skin could also cause itching)

3. Oral Iron and Multivitamin Supplements
