What Causes Itching In The Scrotum While On Medication For Poison Ivy?

Question: For the past week or so, I have moments when the hair in my scrotum seems to tingle, and the sensation to itch very high. It is not constant, but only at certain times, most often as I am trying to sleep at night. At the same time,I have been taking an oral steroid for my poison ivy. What is this? What can be done about it? When it happens at night the only thing I can do to get relief is to put a cold wash cloth on it.

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be poison ivy; physical exam needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

If I am not mistaken you were exposed to poison ivy and are seeking treatment for the same. Poison ivy exposure leads to symptoms like itching, redness, swelling and blisters, resulting in a rash either in the exposed region or a region which has come in contact with a substance called urushiol. If your groin was also exposed to the poison ivy or urushiol then this could very well be the cause, but if not, then there are numerous other conditions we will have to ponder over, I shall discuss them further on.

It is important to note that all the symptoms of poison ivy exposure should/would prevail during the day or any other time as well, and would not be restricted only to night time.

Possible conditions that could result in specifically a nocturnal groin itch include scabies, dermatitis, fungal infections, parasite infections, side effect of medications, etc. I would suggest you to schedule an appointment with your doctor for a physical examination and a complete blood count.

There does exist a possibility of poison ivy exposure to the groin without your knowledge or this being just a side effect of the steroids you are on, but I would be more comfortable if all the other conditions mentioned above (which require treatment) are ruled out by your doctor as well. I hope you understand why I recommend the doctors visit.

I hope you find my response helpful sir. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to assist you further.

Best wishes.
