What Causes Lack Of Menstruation While Taking Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I have been taking birth control for about 6 years now, and this past year I have not gotten a period at all. I have only had negative pregnancy tests. Is there a reason I am no longer having a period?

I was also wondering, is this safe that I am not getting a period, and will my fertility be affected at all?

Brief Answer:
Normal thinning of uterine lining = no bleeding, fertility spared.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the question and thank you for visiting this site.

When women are on birth control, even when they are allowing their bodies to "cycle" monthly, the lining of the uterus is progressively thinned to wear their periods can be extremely light. It is also the case that patients can even have no period, just as you are experiencing. So, this is the reason that you are not getting a period AND I would suggest to you that you could even just skip the placebo pills and take the active pills continuously - please let me know if this does not make sense.

This is not unsafe to not get a period. The birth control pills will not affect future fertility. Once you stop the pill, there is no significant delay to being able to get pregnant.

Please let me know if this helps.
